張藝謀在1990年代轉型后的兩部電影《我的父親母親》與《一個都不能少》中，也有著獨到的想法。張藝謀把這兩部電影的配樂都交給了國內著名的音樂人三寶操刀。作為學院派的音樂人，蒙古族出身的三寶有著深厚的作曲能力，同時也擅長寫“京式”流行歌曲——馮小剛的電影《不見不散》配樂與同名主題曲正是三寶的杰作。但是在處理《我的父親母親》與《一個都不能少》這兩部配樂時，三寶在張導的授意下采用了完全不同的創作方法。為了配合《我的父親母親》詩意、感人的溫暖畫面，三寶創作了優美動人的主旋律，并用多種樂器分別演奏予以加強。在影片最高潮時，插入無歌詞的女聲哼唱，讓觀眾回味無窮。在《一個都不能少》的電影配樂創作中，三寶以陜北民樂作為基調，通過嗩吶、二胡等民族樂器演奏，時而詼諧時而溫婉，成功地營造了影片氣氛。張藝謀的這兩部電影大獲成功，三寶功不可沒。電影原聲唱片甚至在北美隆重發行，可見影響之大。正所謂：“民族的才是世界的”。大打民族牌，是華語電影配樂走向世界的秘方之二。
