此片原聲配樂由 Philip Glass 作曲。1900年，科學的發展還未能遮蓋魔術的神秘感，維也納的人們對艾森海姆（愛德華·諾頓 Edward Norto飾）的魔術更是達到了癡迷的狀態。這個神奇的魔術師總是能把現實和虛幻的東西混為一體，讓人墜入云里霧里，懷疑他是否真的具有超能力。而臺下的烏爾偵探，更是想從艾森海姆每一場的表演里看出幕后的真相。
　　一天，一位上臺接受挑戰的女子令艾森海姆大為震驚——她就是自己往日的戀人蘇菲（杰西卡·貝爾 Jessica Biel 飾）。他們曾經因為等級門戶之故被迫分開，而如今，蘇菲將成為王儲的妻子。盡管這樣，二人還是舊情復熾，無法自拔。當蘇菲打算放棄一切跟愛森海姆私奔時，悲劇卻發生了,她離奇死去，所有證據都表明兇手就是由愛生恨的王儲。真相似乎已經大白，但是魔術師的世界亦真亦幻，實情也隨之撲朔迷離。
