本片改編自女作家貝弗莉德歐諾弗里奧1990年出版的同名自傳，它描述的是女主人公1961年至1986年間的一段充滿波折的人生經歷。著名影星德魯·巴里摩爾在片中演繹這個經歷婚姻不幸但卻自強不息的女性形象。

　　故事發生在20世紀60年代。主人公貝弗莉是一個充滿幻想、渴望出名的女孩，她的夢想是考進大學，然后從事寫作，成為一名作家。可是，為實現夢想而努力念書的她擋不住情欲的誘惑，與中途退學、不求上進的雷打得火熱并最終懷孕。在父母的壓力下，貝弗莉勉強同雷結婚，告別學生時代，開始枯燥乏味的主婦生活。不久，兒子詹森呱呱墜地，貝弗莉只得整日困守在家，照顧年幼的兒子。時光就這樣日復一日、年復一年地逝去。這期間，貝弗莉依然戀戀不忘少女時代的夢想，伺機完成自己的學業。數年后，貝弗莉和染上毒癮的丈夫雷分道揚鑣。無望的生活出現轉機，她設法進入一所大學，并最終實現自己的作家夢……
