影片聚焦于羅賓漢成為傳奇和傳說前的生活經歷，將以全新的方式講述歷史上真正的羅賓漢的故事。他是如何從法外之徒變為國家英雄，又是如何從國家英雄變為故事和傳說的。
公元13世紀的英國，弓箭手羅賓漢（拉塞爾·克羅）跟隨“獅心王”理查的大軍上前線與法軍作戰，那時的羅賓漢只想著求得自保，并沒有展現出后來的俠義精神。理查國王去世以后，羅賓漢來到了諾丁漢，這里被腐敗的諾丁漢治安官弄得民不聊生，苛捐雜稅多如牛毛。羅賓漢在這里見到了一個獨特的寡婦瑪麗安女士（凱特·布蘭切特），他很快就被其堅定勇敢的氣質所吸引并深深愛上了她，不過瑪麗安卻對羅賓漢的身份和動機產生懷疑。為了改變瑪麗安對自己的成見，也為了拯救村民于水火，羅賓漢召集了一群有能力有意愿的人，和他一起揭竿而起，懲治腐朽的上層階級，改變社會不公。他的這一舉動最終使人民重新凝聚在一起，讓英國免予陷入內戰。
