本片根據杰出的英國作家狄更斯名著改編。年幼時的尼古拉斯·尼克貝(查理·漢納姆飾)享受著自由安逸的生活，父親的突然死亡使一家人頓時陷入了赤貧，他們舉家來到倫敦，尋求尼古拉斯的叔叔拉爾夫的幫助。
　　叔叔拉爾夫是一個冷酷而且利欲熏心的人。對于前來投奔的尼克貝一家，他只求能從他們身上最大程度的榨出油水來。
　　尼古拉斯被送進當地的一所學校，校長是拉爾夫的熟人沃克弗德(吉姆·布勞德本特飾)，一個殘忍的以虐待人為樂的變態狂。最終，尼古拉斯不堪忍受這種環境，與另外一個被虐待的孩子史邁克(杰米·貝爾飾)出逃，尋求改變自己命運的希望之路。
　　一路上，他們曾被好心的巡游劇團團長文森特收留，也遇到慷慨的采瑞博兄弟，尼古拉斯還愛上了美麗的姑娘馬德琳(安妮·海瑟薇飾)，尼古拉斯能最終獲得成功，實現一家幸福團聚的理想么？

擔任影片配樂的是英國的作曲家Rachel Portman，她是第一位也是唯一一位獲得Oscar獎的女作曲家(憑借電影Emma的配樂)。該片配樂是Portman一貫擅長的古典風格，弦樂+雙簧管，很優美的旋律，只是初聽覺得和她其它幾部電影配樂作品很相似。
