未來某年的7月2日，美國各地的監視站發現一艘直徑達數百英里的巨大飛船接近了地球。飛船發出的無線電信號干擾了地球的通信衛星信號，并放出了多艘直徑達15英里的子飛船飛抵地球上各大城市的上空。外星飛船敵友未明，人們陷入了恐慌和迷惑。
　　電腦工程師戴維（杰夫•戈德布拉姆 飾）破譯出外星人發出的無線電信號，其實是攻擊的倒計時信號，他設法通知了前妻，總統的助理康妮，但是為時已晚，7月3日，外星人的飛船開始攻擊地球，人類文明瞬間遭到巨大的打擊和災難。總統（比爾•普爾曼 飾）等人撤離到軍事基地，指揮空軍反擊，卻猶如以卵擊石，毫無作用，軍事基地也被摧毀，唯有飛行員史蒂文（威爾•史密斯 飾）設法誘使一架外星人戰斗飛艇墜毀。
　　幸存者們逃到了秘密軍事基地，在那里，科學家們一直在研究一艘50多年前墜毀的外星飛艇，致力于找出對付外星人的辦法，那里也是人類最后的希望……
