男主人公(尼克·凱勒)可以說是一事無成，和家人關系不好，時常處于失業的危險中，缺乏愛與被愛的自信；女主人公(利拉)是一個不能承受哪怕一丁點兒壓力的人，更害怕陌生人的碰觸。

尼克·凱勒是家里的“敗類”，因為一次又一次的失業，繼父海因里希和哥哥維克托都看不起他，惟有母親依然相信他最終會有所成。尼克在一家精神診療所找到新的工作，在那里，他把一個企圖自殺的女孩——利拉從生死關頭救了回來。晚上，當尼克回到家中，他驚奇地發現，利拉居然出現在了他家的廚房…… 利拉不想再回到診療所，懇求尼克收留她，尼克面對無助的利拉頓時不知所措。尼克，一個從來沒有想過對任何人負責的人一下要擔起照顧另一個人的責任。而利拉，一個從來都與世隔絕，習慣于獨處的人，開始要學習如何與別人相處……
