本劇由《Friday Night Lights》的一位制片人打造，用來接替NBC播出了15年之久的人氣長劇《急診室的故事》（ER）。NBC介紹說，這是一部「非常新穎」的醫療劇，不僅情節和氣氛緊張，而且「真實性」也非常強。該劇描述了醫療行業中最危險的一類職業－－第一急救員。你在美國的影視作品中經常可以看到這類場景：當有人遭受重大人身傷害（比如中槍）時，急救車很快便風馳電掣地趕到，從車上跳下幾個人，有的拿醫療箱，有的抬擔架，有的負責檢查傷者、做人工呼吸、打強心針，等等。這些人就被稱作「第一急救員」。
　　每當有緊急情況出現，無論傷者在陸上，在水上，還是在空中，無論要爬上環美金字塔中心（Transamerica Pyramid）那高高的樓頂，還是要潛入舊金山灣那漆黑的海底，舊金山中心醫院急救小組總是在第一時間趕到現場。不管周遭的環境有多么險惡，形勢有多么復雜，治病救人始終是他們的首要任務。對這群可歌可敬的英雄來說，生活永遠充滿了挑戰。
　　該劇由Derek Luke、Cliff Curtis、Anastasia Griffith、Aimee Garcia、Kevin Rankin及Jamey Sheridan主演。
