本片改編自葛蕾熙達·柯維爾（cressida cowell）的同名兒童圖書。話說在一個遙遠的國度里，海上有著一群神出鬼沒的維京海盜，而統治這群海盜的，則是名叫“Hiccup二世”的首領，而他的兒子，自然就是“Hiccup Horrendous Haddock三世”（杰伊·巴魯切爾飾）。Hiccup二世對自己的兒子寄予厚望，一直要把他培養成一個接班人，但Hiccup三世最擅長做的事卻是睡懶覺和無所事事，父親給他安排的種種戰斗訓練幾乎都被他搪塞過去，一日一天一天的這么過下去，終于要到了Hiccup成年的日子。
　　根據維京海盜的“盜規”，凡是年滿18歲的首領繼承人，必須要通過維京海盜的考驗，才有成為首領的資格。而這份考驗就是：捉到一條殘暴兇狠的龍，并且順服它，使它成為自己的寵物。壓根就沒好好學過功夫的Hiccup三世硬著頭皮踏上了尋龍的歷程，可不想卻偏偏讓他撞上了這么一條龍：一個剛剛出生，乳臭未干的小龍崽！望著這頭連牙都沒長出來的小龍，Hiccup三世決定馴服它然后起程回家，不過他所不知道的是，整個冒險才剛剛開始而已……
