民謠歌手，作曲家Elliott Smith 1997年由于電影《Good Will Hunting》中的一曲Miss Misery的成功，從無名的獨立音樂人成功的進入了主流音樂圈。他出生于美國波特蘭，14歲開始寫歌并錄制樣帶。隨后，Smith組成了樂隊Heatmiser，在1993年發行了第一張LP《Dead Air》，一年后，他在一個小廠牌下，發行了個人首張專輯《Roman Candle》。1995年，他簽約于Kill Rockstar公司，發行了同名專輯《Elliott Smith》，之后1997年又發行了《Either/Or》。幾乎同時，電影導演，同時也是Smith的超級歌迷Gus Van Sant征求在電影《Good Will Hunting》中使用Smith的音樂，并同時邀請他為電影寫一些新歌。其中Miss Misery令人驚訝的獲得了奧斯卡最佳原創歌曲的提名，雖然最后并未獲獎，Smith還是出席了典禮并且和超級明星Trisha Yearwood，以及最佳原創歌曲獲獎者 Celine Dion同臺演出。隨后Smith改簽了Dreamworks公司，1998年推出了他最成功的專輯《XO》。2年后，又發行了《Figure 8》，這張專輯制作精良，編曲加入華麗豐富的管弦樂，與他前幾次的solo專輯相比，風格一下子轉變了不少。接下來的2年，Smith一直在努力的策劃他的下一張新專輯，《From a Basement on a Hill》。但是，他并沒有能夠完成這張作品，讓他所有的朋友和歌迷震驚的是，Elliott Smith在2003年10月21日結束了自己的生命。
